Riding a horse is therapy both mental and physical. Add a program to it and the results are astounding!
Therapeutic Riding. Documentation of positive effects from the interaction between humans and animals include lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased beta-endorphin levels, decrease stress, feelings of anger, tension and anxiety. Equine therapy is also known as “Therapeutic Riding” and is being used in many areas including addiction, depression, mood disorders, and other psychological diagnosis. Horses are a great tool when working with special needs children, as the horse is non-judgmental and gives unconditional affection. Sometimes just brushing them brings great joy and an increase of self-worth. The companionship for kids who have trouble making friends is invaluable. The benefits of the equine therapy programs, including hippotherapy, respond enthusiastically and positively, in an enjoyable and natural surrounding.
Hippotherapy “hippos” Greek for horse is a treatment that uses the multidimensional rhythmic movement of the horse in a natural pattern of side-to-side, up and down, and front to back. As the patient rides the rhythmic movement sends vibrations up the spine, through the legs and hips, down the arms, in the shoulder and neck areas, thus a complete natural massage and gentle work-out. Hippotherapy can improve balance, posture, mobility, muscle tone, function, emotional, behavioral, trust, patience, self-esteem, self-confidence, motor coordination, and communication for all ages.People who benefit range from all sorts of diseases including but not limited to: post traumatic syndrome, depression, panic, anxiety, war after shock, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, developmental delay, brain injury, stroke, autism, arthritis, muscular dystrophy, amputation, seizure disorders, learning and language disabilities.
